About

The Federal Guidelines for Suicide Prevention are outlined in the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This strategy is a bold, 10-year, whole-of-society approach aimed at reducing suicide rates and improving mental health outcomes across the country.

 Four Strategic Directions

  • Community-Based Prevention

    • Build sustainable partnerships

    • Promote upstream prevention

    • Reduce access to lethal means

    • Support postvention and lived experience voices

  • Treatment & Crisis Services

    • Integrate suicide prevention into health care

    • Expand access to crisis services like the 988 Lifeline

  • Surveillance, Research & Quality Improvement

    • Improve data collection and accessibility

    • Support evidence-based research and evaluation

  • Health Equity

    • Embed equity into all suicide prevention efforts

    • Focus on marginalized and disproportionately affected populations

    • Diversify and support the suicide prevention workforce
